Butyric acid

Butyric acid is a volatile fatty acid. In poorly preserved grass and maize silos, butyric acid is produced by butyric acid bacteria. Butyric acid has a nasty smell and is characteristic of a poor and damp grass silo. By chopping, pre-drying, well-rolling the silo, or using silo additives, the formation of butyric acid can be prevented.

Butyric acid in animals?

Butyric acid is formed by the breakdown of sugars and unstable starch. It stimulates the growth of the rumen papillae. By increasing the absorption surface of the papillae, they are essential for the absorption of fatty acids through the rumen wall.
