Rumen Acidosis

In rumen acidosis, the pH value in the rumen drops. Normally, the pH value should be between 6.0 and 6.8. If the rumen pH drops below 5.5, acidosis can even occur in the blood. This can be life-threatening. Rumen acidosis can also cause damage to kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

What influence does heat stress have on rumen pH?

Heat stress can play an important role in the development of rumen acidosis. Heat stress can occur at temperatures from 20 degrees Celsius and in quite high humidity. The animals do not produce enough saliva for bicarbonate supply. This is because they eat less roughage due to the conditions. Sodium bicarbonate buffers the acidity in the rumen. Adding sodium bicarbonate to the feed promotes balance in the rumen and helps prevent rumen acidosis.
