Carbon

Carbon is a nutrient essential for all plants and animals. Plants extract carbon dioxide from the air and convert it into sugars and building blocks through photosynthesis. The transport of carbon dioxide in water, however, occurs thousands of times slower than in air. Water plants must therefore have special adaptations to obtain enough carbon. Most aquatic plants are bicarbonate users; they can utilize an alternative carbon source.
