Heat stress can play a significant role in the development of acidosis in the silo. Heat stress can occur at temperatures starting from 20 degrees Celsius and with fairly high humidity. The animals do not produce enough saliva for the bicarbonate supply. This is because they eat less roughage under these conditions. Sodium bicarbonate buffers the acidity in the silo. Adding sodium bicarbonate to the feed promotes balance in the silo and helps prevent acidosis in the silo.
